DNA splicing had, indeed, in the past been something that human beings had come to love. They'd started on small animals, like rats and mice, but soon went as far as to test their bizarre mutations on man's best friend. Their attempts started out successful and interesting, some canines possessing pelts that were thought to be unnatural in color and others even sprouting horns and large fangs. At first, humans thought little to nothing in regards to the amazing feats that they'd succeeded, but quickly regretted it as time went on.
One of their most recent experiments, an unnamed canine who was later dubbed “Mnemosyne”, lost their mind. They had been one of the most extensively experimented on of all of their subjects, and it was later discovered that the DNA and contamination in the bodies of the canines lead to severe decay in the mind. Humans were not sure how to react to such a mindless beast rising from a once docile creature, and dumped as much of the fluids and concoctions that they used to mutate the animals into a nearby reservoir. They assumed that if it was not inserted into the bloodstream, the animals would remain unaffected. They couldn't be more wrong.
Little did they know, that even when ingested the animals of their city would be mutated and contaminated with the strange splicing liquid they created. Over time, animals began to slowly lose their minds and became aggressive toward other humans within the city. People were killed and the infections only spread further. It didn't take long before humans around the area decided it was best to abandon the city entirely, and keep the mutated beasts locked away behind a giant fence. They decided no canine would get out without being shot, and no human would be allowed in. This large area that was once three, bustling cities had been left as nothing but a deserted, contaminated wasteland.
Humans still exist to this day, but the only contact that any mutant within The Fence will come into would be a bullet through the brain. Escape is impossible, regardless of the rumors that many canines have about it. The world that these canines now live in is a dangerous one, where making one wrong move could easily cost them their entire life. Packs have begun rising from the ashes of the contaminated world, some meaning well and others meaning anything but. Although they have different intentions and are different in nearly every single way, the is one thing that each and every dog within the fence has in common: A fear of the Antiphrenics.
Antiphrenics, roughly translating to 'one without a mind', are great beasts that have been overtaken by the decay in their bodies. Their minds have been rendered useless, and they've been left as feral beasts with the goal to destroy. Every dog within The Fence has a risk of becoming one of these savage animals regardless of how little or how great their mutations are. Some packs have attempted to tame these mindless beasts, while others have decided to kill them or avoid them at all costs. They're ruthless and unpredictable creatures that, when spotted by a human, will be instantly shot down. Their numbers are steadily growing, however, and they remain a great risk to the civilizations within.
A once flourishing city inhabited by humans and their creations has been transformed into nothing but a City of Dust.
